Three Bajan surfers make a splash
Barbadian surfers Josh Burke, Jacob Burke and Zander Venezia recently returned home from the popular Volcom VQS Junior event held in New Smyrna Beach Florida where they performed admirably.
All three surfers managed to reach the finals in their respective divisions. Josh Burke, who competed in the Pro, surfed through four rounds of tough competition and placed fourth overall behind eventual champion Noah Schweizer from the United States, Jake McGuire who placed second and recent Association of Surfing Professional (ASP) Junior Champion, Daniel Glenn. Despite placing fourth Burke put on a great showing in his semi-final heat when he posted four wave scores that were in excellent range to dominate that heat and book his place in the final.
Venezia in the Grom division, 11-13, surfed consistently throughout the event to advance through to the final with comfort. Trailing in the final he picked up one of the highest scores in his division in the dying seconds of the heat, blasting two huge top turns and a foam climb to place an outstanding 3rd and an automatic qualification into the Volcom Grand Finale to be held in California May 2015.
Another Bajan who has been on the rise is 14-year-old Jacob Burke. Competing in the junior division, 14-16, he surfed solidly and consistently on his way to a commendable 6th place overall.
