UWI defeat Eden Stars in women’s football

Striker Coleen Johnson scored two impressive goals as the University of the West Indies (UWI) defeated Eden Stars Unity 1 by 4-3 in the Barbados Football Association’s (BFA) Women’s Football League yesterday at Emmerton, St Michael.

The first goal came off Johnson’s boot in the 13th minute. Eden Stars responded 26 minutes later through Nykeyah Gittens, and then again in the 30th minute, after being awarded a penalty kick, which Sharifa Corbin took full advantage of.

With her side down by one goal, Johnson responded in the 43rd minute for UWI, easily slotting across to the right of the goalkeeper and into the back of the nets. The scores were therefore level  2-2 at half time.

UWI opened the goal scoring in the second half, thanks to Renasha Jones. However, Eden Stars put up a fight, with Nashandi Clarke managing to sneak in a goal to keep the encounter on an even keel at 3-3.

In the dying stages of the match both teams had to dig deep. The ball was shared back and forth between the two sides but no goal was scored, forcing the game into overtime.

In the 93rd minute, Shauna Evelyn scored the deciding goal that gave UWI the victory.

In the second match up, Mavericks Football Club beat a struggling Empire 3-0 while Technique lost by default against Genesis in the third game that was due to be played at the same venue.

Tomorrow the action moves to the Friendship ground in Hothersal Turning where Eden Stars will play Empire at 6 p.m. UWI are also due to take on the tournament leaders, National Sports Council, on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the same venue.

On Saturday, play returns to Emmerton at 3 p.m. when Technique clashes with Mavericks.
