Explosion of gospel
The much anticipated occasion is almost upon us, and the stage is already set for an exciting Independence weekend of gospel music of the highest quality.
One can say it is going to be a double delight for supporters of this art form when veterans of gospel music rub shoulders with dynamic emerging artistes at two unrelated events and locations on Sunday and Monday.
Sunday’s extravaganza, titled Independence Gospel Explosion 2014, will be at the Wildey Gymnasium where local and international performers meet for an evening of shake-the-roof and inspiring music.
At the Gymnasium will be the likes of recording acts James Leacock, Allison Norville-Forde, Gozzy, John King and Sheldon Hope.
Joining them will be emerging music ministers Sherry Ann Maughn, who is the 2014 queen of the Flow Gospel Challenge, along with Omar Osbourne, Dave Cumberbatch, Shem White and Praise United.
These will be backed by the SIFA Gospel Choir and SIF Band.
On that same stage from the global scene are recording artiste Minister Bridget Blucher and six-time Stellar Award winner and Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Vashawn Mitchell.
They are coming in specially to celebrate this country’s 48th anniversary of Independence with their Bajan counterparts.
The event, under the patronage of Minister of Social Care Steve Blackett and Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley, begins at 6:30 p.m., under the theme Ushering In His Presence.
One of the big things about Independence Gospel Explosion is its heart.
That is why this year, organizers will be focused on giving to the HIV Food Bank.
All are therefore being urged to bring along non-perishable food items which will be donated to this worthy cause.
“Independence Gospel Explosion is working in conjunction with the Ministry of Social Care’s HIV/AIDS programme coordinator to assist with this drive,” said the organizers.
As is reflected in the artistic line-up, the producers of Gospel Explosion are this year shifting attention towards showcasing a much larger array of Barbadian artistes who need the opportunity spread their message to a wider audience.
“Giving local gospel artistes and their music more awareness is always present in Independence Gospel Explosion. The producers promise they will continue to explore all possibilities to ensure that the local gospel music culture gains the recognition it truly deserves. It is the commitment of the organizers to continue to reach beyond their ability to produce a worship event for God’s glory,” said a statement from the producers.
While Gospel Explosion may be the headline aspect of the overall event, tonight was its launch, with the Sanctuary Empowerment Centre in Country Road, St Michael, being the venue for Ministry Of Word In His Presence.
That began at 6:30 p.m., giving patrons the opportunity to “feed” from the Holy Scriptures, with the “food” being delivered by Bishop Wesley Dear of Covenant Life.
On Monday bank-holiday will be the second part of the double delight.
This one is being billed Block Praize and is slated for Block 14, Newton Industrial Estate, Christ Church, running from 3 p.m. until everybody goes home.
The organizers are erecting two stages and featuring six DJs, along with an array of local artistes, who will be in the, Praise Zone. We are talking about people like Big Jim, New Connections, Chosen Generation, Miraclettes, Gozzy, Hoszia, Sirrah, Makonem, Richard Antonio, Mr Warrington, Neil Crichlow And Life Soul Winners, Marcus King, Romaro Greaves, Alaina Greenidge, Richard Antonio, Redbwoy, Sherry Ann Maughn, Shanice Lashley, and yours truly. Also appearing will be spoken word artist Marcus King.
Block Praize is being produced by top gospel band Promise.
I am outta here for now. Blessings!
