Javon Cummins cleans up with five wickets for eight runs

Javon Cummins snatched a five-wicket haul as unbeaten Bayley’s Primary romped into the semi-final round of the Guardians Group Herman Griffith 2014 Primary Schools tournament, with a 63-run victory over St Cyprian’s at the St Catherine’s ground yesterday.

Off-spin bowler Cummins finished with five wickets for eight runs from 4.5 overs as St Cyprian’s, chasing 134 for victory, were skiddled out for 70 off 21 overs.

Winning the toss and batting, Bayley’s posted 133 for seven thanks to opener Ramario Mayers-Alleyne who top-scored with 51 while Jayden Small scored 14 and Azari Best, 11.

All-rounder Jordan Reifer was the pick of St Cyprian’s bowling attack with two for 23 runs from five overs with Jayden Webster (2-29) and Zane Corbin (2-32), also collecting two wickets apiece.

In reply, the St Cyprian’s batsmen never came to grips with the Bayley’s Primary attack, especially the wiles of Cummins who collected the second five-wicket haul of the tournament. The first was against Hilda Skeene when he grabbed five wicket in five deliveries.

Reifer top-scored with 15 and Alex Stuart got 12, but Cummins got great support from Daniel Joseph who grabbed two or ten, with Best picking up two for 21.

Bayley’s who have won the title four times with the latest win being in 2011, will play West Terrace who defeated St Giles Primary at Ellerton by eight wickets.

Those two teams will meet next Wednesday at Passage Road.
