A 27-year-old Dominican man has been fined $20,000 for importing two kilogrammes of cannabis into Barbados

Abiyah Tatawa James appeared in the District “B” Magistrates’ Court yesterday and was slapped with the fine for bringing in the drugs on Sunday.

Police say he arrived at the Grantley Adams International Airport about 9:45 pm from Dominica and cleared Immigration before being interviewed by police.

A search was conducted of his luggage and one transparent plastic package containing cannabis was found in a false bottom of his suitcase.

He was charged with possession, possession with intent to supply, trafficking and importation.

James has to pay the money on the importation charge to avoid 18 months in prison.
