Expo set to showcase Barbados talent

Barbados will showcase its sports diversity to the world when the Gymnasium Limited in collaboration with the National Sports Council (NSC) host the first ever inaugural Sporting Clubs of Barbados Expo and All Stars Basketball event on November 29th.

This announcement was made yesterday morning by interim Chief Executive Office for the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium and the NSC, Jerry Blenman during a press briefing held at the Gymnasium.

He said the event was conceptualized and designed for the purpose of showcasing sports and opportunities for sports development in Barbados.

“There are a lot of young people who are involved in sports and we has a development body as it relates to sports are excited about the opportunities sports has to offer our youths,” Blenman said.

“We have already established that they are members in our community who may not be academic but they are skilled in sports and how we are able to work with them and assist them to develop and create opportunities in sports not only locally but regionally and international is important.

“And this to our mind forms the platform for helping the public to appreciate the various disciplines and those who are involved in those disciplines.”

It is expected to be a packed day of activities with an All Star basketball celebrities shoot out which will be one of the main highlights of the day, in an effort to raise funds for at least two charities.

Also included in the proceedings will a Fun Village which will have a number of sports cars on display outside of the Gymnasium, with patrons getting the opportunity to test their skills in many of the sporting disciplines.

The International Cheerleading Federation (ICF) are expected to send international cheerleaders to participate in the event.

Blenman said up to 50 sporting disciplines across the island were expected to turn out.

The day will commence at 10 am with a brief opening ceremony, followed by the viewing of various expos on display.

Three seminars will be staged, the first one entitled Achieving Sporting Excellence Through Good Health Management, with the second looking at the sport of road tennis.

The final seminar will look at how individuals can take a particular sporting discipline and develop it into a business.
