Opposition Leader Mia Mottley delivered a bruising assessment of today’s economic update by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler, saying it was nothing more than “a waste of journalists’ time”.
She also urged Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to speak to the nation.
In a brief statement, Mottley accused Sinckler of creating “an aura as if he had something to say only to come to rattle off generalities”.
She charged this left Barbadians no wiser on the state of the economy.
“They do not know the Budget date; they do not know where the expenditure cuts will come from, and they still do not know when the projects referred to repeatedly will start.”
Mottley however said it was only evident that Barbadians would have to brace for harsher economic measures.
“What they do know is that there will be more taxes and more job losses, putting more pressure on an already beleaguered social security system.”
The Barbados Labour Party leader was adamant that the situation had become untenable and insisted that it was time for the Prime Minister to bring clarity to the island’s state of affairs and to restore confidence.
“Clearly the time has come for the PM to recognize that speaking to the country is no longer an option. The country is hurting and it needs to hear from its democratically elected leader. Minister Sinckler and the Governor of the Central Bank have lost their credibility on these issues.
Mottley announced that the BLP’s economic advisor Dr Clyde Mascoll would meet with the media tomorrow to assess the data in the Central’s economic report for the third quarter issued last week as well as today’s statement by the Finance Minister.
