Couple missing at sea

The Barbados Coast Guard is assisting marine authorities in St Lucia and Martinique in the search for a couple that left the Caribbean island to sail to Barbados over the weekend, but never got here.

Arthur Alleyne, 63, also known as Captain Sam, and his wife Sharon Went-Alleyne, 59, left for a routine sail to Barbados in their 47-foot yacht Serenity and have not been heard from since.

A relative told St Lucia News Online that the couple were expected in Barbados on Saturday.

But reports indicate that a severe storm may have caused some damage to the communication system on the yacht.

“The last contact they had was at 1 p.m. on Saturday,” an unnamed relative was quoted as saying.

“They only had the VHS radio; everything else seemed to have failed. So we think that they were damaged from the storm and nobody has been able to contact them since.”

Efforts made by marine authorities to contact the couple have so far failed.

Their children are appealing for anyone in the surrounding islands with access to boats, light aircraft or helicopters to join in the search as the yacht may be drifting.

“We are trying to get the word out so that if anyone saw anything or heard anything that they can try to contact the authorities,” a family member said.

Alleyne is an experienced sailor and boat captain with over 40 years’ experience.

He is the former captain of celebrity ship Brigg Unicorn, which was used in the filming of all three Pirates Of The Caribbean movies, as well as in the television series Roots.
