Combat clubs show off skills

Bajan Fights held the third meet for local combat athletes at the Barbados Community College Gymnasium last Sunday.

The seven bout card in K-1 kickboxing and submission grappling brought together combatants from Black Tigers, Young Dragons, Universal Kempo Karate, Lions Den, Jones Academy, Capoeira Barbados, ITF Taekwondo, Boxing Barbados, Kime Kan Karate and Habana Fight Club.

It was an action-packed occasion with fighters displaying tremendous talent and skills, which kept fans on their feet. They were able to witness an upset in the Junior Grappling Division where champion Demaggio Cumberbatch was defeated by Olympic wrestler Daniel King.

In other bouts, 16-year old Kobe Bowen scored a TKO victory over Rashaad Bryan in round 2 of their junior featherweight division. The number one rated featherweight Adrian Holder won a unanimous decision over Adrian Green in a tough match.

Calvin Ifill upset the number one ranked Rico Hurley with a unanimous decision in their heavyweight match.

In submission grappling, Sharita Watson shocked local champ Tamara Brathwaite in their bout which she won on points in three stirring rounds of action.

Jerome Hoyte lost his number 1 ranking position to Jason Green in their lightweight match-up. Green brought his dynamic acrobatic style of combat to the contest and won on points.

The 2014 season will close on December 13 at the Fredrick Smith Secondary School.
