Juniors win tennis tourney

Kianna Marshall and Cherise Slocombe have won their first international junior tournament.

The Barbadian pair, who did not drop a set in the tournament, won the International Tennis Federation Girls Junior Doubles title defeating the number one seeds Camila Ramazzini and Tiffany Huber (Guatemal/USA) in the final, 7-5, 6-4. It was the third edition of the Tobago ITF Junior Tournament which took place at Shaw Park, Tobago, between August 18 and yesterday.

The tournament was the third successive leg in the Caribbean on the international circuit that saw tournaments in St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Barbadians made their mark on the international scene with several wins. In St Lucia, Marshall as well as Melena Lopez and Dylan Hall reached the singles and the doubles semi-finals.

Marshall partnered with Slocombe, while Hall teamed up with Gavin Hutchinson. In St Vincent, Lopez reached the doubles finals with Nicole Bunea of Canada, while Hall reached his second consecutive singles semi-final. In doubles, Marshall and Slocombe as well as Matthew Foster-Estwick and Xavier Lawrence also reached the semi-finals.

Tennis action continues next week when the Barbados Tennis Association hosts the National Junior And Senior Championships at the National Tennis Centre.
