Basketball teams named

Five overseas-based players have been named to the Barbados men’s and women’s teams to compete in the 2014 Caribbean Basketball Confederation Championships in Tortola from July 1 to 5 and 8 to 12 respectively.

Kregg Jones, a six-foot, eight-inch power forward, who hails from St. George and has been on the roster at Cal State Bakersfield, is joined in the line-up by guard Andre Lockhart and six-foot eight-inch forward John Jones. Jones, a former outstanding CARIFTA field athlete, has been in the USA at Illinois State. Lockhart plays professionally in Germany, having also previously plied his trade in England.

The women’s team will be boosted by the return of Jamila Studer as well as the inclusion of Dale-Marie Cumberbatch, a 26-year-old, five foot 11 inch Canada-based player who has led the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference in scoring three consecutive seasons. The very physical player is the fastest and youngest player to 1 000 career points in Canada.

Also named to the Barbados squad is highly talented guard Rahim Gibbons who has been among the leading front-court players in domestic basketball over the past few seasons. Son of former national player and national coach, Barry Rock, Gibbons will be on his first major overseas assignment.

The team has depth at basically every position and much will be expected of the likes of the consistent Jeremy Gill, Junior Moore and Akeem Marsh.

The women’s team also has some explosive talent in the Bowen sisters, Winmalacia and Winmarie, as well as Toni Atherley who has also had some international exposure, and the highly promising Ashlee Daniel.

Recently appointed coach Nigel Lloyd is back at the helm of the men’s team while the women’s squad will be under the charge of Terry Inniss.
