Rick on a roll
Popular soca artist could be the next big thing
Barbados’ most popular entertainer could soon become the next major global signing from the Caribbean.
This is the view of chief executive officer of CRS Music & Media, Stephen Lubin, whose locally based company has a contract with Rickey Lil Rick Reid
to manage his digital music sales, as well as to distribute the albums of this proliferate singer/songwriter.
Lubin told Barbados TODAY many people did not recognize the depth of Lil Rick’s music catalogue, but that believed the artiste could be on the verge
of a major breakthrough on the international market.
“I think that Rick is on a roll. That is my personal feeling. Rick just seems to go from strength to strength. Last year’s song Monster Wine is just starting to get momentum globally. And my feeling is that if Rick keeps at it, keeps in this direction, he possibly could be the next major signing from this area,” suggested Lubin, who is also director of international licensing and head of artistic and repertoire development for CRS.
He noted that Trinidad and Tobago’s soca artist Bungi Garlin had just been signed by RCA, “really and truthfully on the back of one incredible song”.
“Rick’s catalogue is so deep; most people don’t realize how deep the catalogue is, and how many incredible songs he has had over the years.”
The music producer also disclosed that while he was yet to discuss this matter with Lil Rick, he was seriously considering releasing a Best Of Lil Rick album, some time after Crop Over.
“Something else I really want to focus on with Rick . . . . We started talking last year and hopefully we are going to finish up this idea this year that we could put together a Best Of Lil Rick, which will highlight what a wonderful talent he is and what fantastic songs he has had over the years.
“Having all the songs on one album will hopefully make the rest of the world realize what an incredible artiste he is,” asserted Lubin.
“I mean that, not just from a fan point of view, but also from the professional people out there, they need to realize what a fantastic talent Rick is,” he said.
The music executive added: “On the distribution side, we are working very, very closely with Lil Rick. Rick will have his third album out this year. We are very grateful for Rick to have faith in us, and we take care of all of Rick’s digital sales.
“One of the first things I did, when I got my position at CRS was, I traced down Rick and we managed to secure him for a five-year digital contract.”
Lubin recalled that the entertainer was not receiving any royalties from his Internet music distribution.
However, he said, money was now flowing in for Lil Rick from that source.
The CRS head also revealed that his company was working on releasing a Crop Over compilation album.
“We will be releasing an album for Crop Over – the Caribbean Hott Party Volume 5 – we are right now at the moment choosing songs for that; we’ve had a tremendous number of submissions for the album. So we’ll be releasing that for Crop Over, pushing that.”
Other CRS releases in the pipeline or under consideration for Crop Over include a distribution album for Platta Studio, Blood, Mickey and Red Plastic Bag.
