Guests of GG and wife
Boscobel Primary School students yesterday got the opportunity to do what most Barbadians have not –– go on a guided tour of Government House and its grounds. Twenty-two of them arrived early, neatly attired, and excited about their imminent encounter with Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave and his wife Loretta Lady Belgrave.
Before the meeting, however, the Governor General’s aide-de-camp Captain Carlos Lovell had the task of giving a brief history of Government House. He told the enquiring students about past Governors General and previous Governors of Barbados, the initial cost of Government House, the hurricane that destroyed the original building, and other bits of history.
The children asked many questions and had much to say about what they thought about the official residence of Barbados’ Head of State.
The students, all of whom sat the Common Entrance Exam on May 6, were encouraged to continue to excel. Lovell told them that while they might not all have gained access to the schools of their choice, they should continue working hard.
After the tour, they gathered in the sitting room where Sir Elliott and Lady Belgrave were waiting.
The two interacted with the youngsters, the Governor General telling jokes and evoking laughter from the children.
After the meeting, the students gifted Sir Elliott and his wife with a rendition of one of his favourite songs –– The Ashgrove. Playtime on the grounds and lunch, compliments Chefette Restaurants, concluded the visit.
