FIDE master and former national champion Martyn Del Castilho is the winner of the 2014 National Blitz championship played recently at the the Chess Centre at Cavans Lane in Bridgetown.

Blitz chess in an exciting format in which each player has five minutes to complete their games and is akin to what Twenty20 overs is to cricket.

Martyn finished on a fast and furious eight points from nine, to edge out current national champion FIDE master Orlando Husbands on tie-break after defeating him in their head to head competition as both players finished on the same number of points.

In a very strong field, which included new international master Delisle Warner, Central American and Caribbean under 14 champion FIDE master Yu Tien Poon and Carifta under 16 champion Allon Richards, Martyn had to fight all the ways to achieve the title.

He only took the lead when he defeated Husbands in round four to go a half point ahead of the field. However a draw in the next round against Warner brought Martyn and Husbands back onto the same points. The players duly won all their remaining games with Martyn winning on tie-break.

In third position was Warner on seven and a half points. He had a steady tournament but his loss to Husbands put him out of contention for first place.

The top under 16 age category prize went to FIDE master Yu Tien Poon who finished in fourth position with six and a half points.

Roberto Castillo of Cuba finished in fifth, Richards in sixth and Dominic Castillo in a credible seventh after a long lay- off.

The next event on the chess calendar will be the United Insurance Primary School team tournament.
