Lil Rick not competing
Barbados, you’ll have to wait again for another year before seeing Lil Rick back in competition’s corner.
Ricky Reid (real name) has become somewhat of a fixture, especially at this time of the year.
But he told Bajan Vibes that, much like the case last year, he was concentrating his energies on doing another album.
“Every year I’m doing an album, working with some of the top producers in Barbados, to bring out some massive songs for the people. Look out for Lil Rick fresh again,” Reid said, noting that he was still not sure what he was going to call his release when it drops.
“I’m still working for the name of the album; but I have the music. So I just might name it after one of the hot songs or something. I must big up Platta, Monstapiece, Dwayne Antrobus and the whole crew. Those are the people I have been working with this year. Look out for me big.
“For sure, I’m not entering the competition this year. I’m taking another one year out. Probably next year I’ll be out and jamming again,” he noted.
Asked about his thoughts on the festival, now in its 40th year, Reid described it as “great”.
“I looking to take it to another level because I releasing tune on top uh tune every year. Uh keeping it real tight, and fuh next year I already got like five songs for Crop Over 2015 put one side. So that is the level that I looking fuh keep creative, keep improving on what yuh doing and try to be better all the time,” he said, but skirted the question if there were any plans to return to the social commentary scene.
“I like social commentary, but it doan benefit yuh. You out a lot uh money and thing and recording and thing. I would have to do it as a hobby. [As for] a social commentary coming fuh de fans and thing, probably I would do that next year.”
And, for all the up-and-coming stars on the scene looking to make it big in the industry, Rick has some advice.
“They got youngsters that could write some songs, but they might not be able to perform them. I know that everybody does want to play a part, but you can play a part also by writing a song and selling it.
“Some people might have the ability to write a song, but they might not be able to perform the song or sing the song. [Look at] Machel. [He] would take a song from anybody and mek it big. So that is the way to go. You might not be a singer, but you may be a songwriter,” Lil Rick said.
