Sugar talks still churning

Minister of Labour and Social Security Dr Esther Byer was locked in talks this evening in the hopes of inking an agreement between the Barbados Agricultural Management Company (BAMC) and sugar workers represented by the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU).

The lengthy discussions began just after 4:15 p.m and were continuing well after 8 p.m.

Today’s discussions are a continuation of those held on Wednesday at which the minister said she hoped to have a deal finalised by the end of the week.

Last month, a breakdown in talks between the BAMC and the BWU led to a crippling week-long strike.
