Spiritual Baptist leader passes on

may182008159

Patriarch of the Spiritual Baptist movement in Barbados, Archbishop Granville Williams, has passed away.

News of his death was confirmed by one church elder, Archdeacon Wilbert Walrond, who said Williams attended church this morning but died at home later in the day.

Several followers gathered at the Sons of God Apostolic Spiritual Baptist Cathedral in Ealing Grove, Christ Church this evening upon learning of his passing.

The death of 90 year old Williams, who has been ailing for some time, follows closely on the heels of yesterday’s rejuvenation and revival day service held by members of the movement at the Bethlehem Memorial Church, Maxwell, Christ Church.

The praise and worship session was characterised by singing, dancing, and clapping to the rhythmic sounds of the drums accompanied by music from the tambourine, sporadic blowing of the conch shell and ringing of the bells.

Williams has been credited with establishing the movement in Barbados back in 1957.

May he rest in Glory. I have to say though that this is the first Baptist I’ve ever seen vested in a cope and mitre. I need to find out more of his church.

May your soul rest in peace Granville. I know you will be sadly missed. I remember vividly as a child, every good Friday evening, people would assembled on their porches and await the arrival of Granville and his followers as they procession through the village, singing songs of praises.
