Social workers needed in schools

156848_483410092792_5466462_nThe president of the Barbados Association of Professional Social Workers is calling for social workers to be placed in the island’s schools.

Bertrum Bispham says this would help to eliminate some of the problems in schools.

“If we work with the kids now, we wouldn’t have to worry about them later.  If you do maintenance now then you wouldn’t have to repair it later . . . We need social workers in the schools in Barbados, not only to work with the students, but also with the families [of the students],” he told the media on the sidelines of a church service at the St. Luke’s Anglican Church as part of activities to mark World Social Work Day.

The day is celebrated on Tuesday.

Other activities planned include a panel discussion on World Social Work Day and a Breakfast Walk on Saturday.
