Records tumble on Daryll Jordan sports day
There is the adage that the old must give way to the new and that held true today when Daryll Jordan Secondary School held its Inter-house sports day at the National Stadium.
Five long-standing records were shattered as Ward “Green” House walked away with the championship with 1228 points. Ifill “Blue” House took second place honours with 1074 points, Corbin “Red” House finished third with 1037 points and defending champions Jordan “Yellow” House went from first last year to last with 808 points.
Despite not retaining the championship, though, Jordan House captured three out of the five records broken which included the under-15 boys’ long jump which had stood since 1976. Young Dario King was on a mission to erase that previous record of 5.72 and did so with much aplomb increasing the distance to 5.77. King was also named the junior victor ludorum with 60 points after also winning the 100M, 800M and javelin throw, and placing third in the 200M and high jump. The under-15 girls’ 200M record of 26.70 seconds set by Pamela Lavine of cricket fame and which stood from 1983, was demolished by Aliyah Bascombe in a time of 26.47.
A 1991 record was also broken in the Under-20 girls’ javelin throw when Danicia King tossed it 32.80 to erase the previous 32.16 from the record books. Ward House accounted for the two other outstanding records broken. Well known distance runner and promising junior boxer Mary Fraser slammed the open girls’ 3000M field creating a new record of 12:00.56 to replace the previous mark of 12:56.00. Fraser topped the under-17 girls’ division with 36 points after also winning the 200M and 400M. In the under-20 girls’ division Tianna Clarke broke the shot put record with a new distance of 11.25 to erase the old record of 10.85 set in 2011. Among the other outstanding individual performances was senior victor ludorum in the under-20 boys’ division Jamal Collymore with 48 points for Corbin House.
Collymore won the 400M, came second in the 100M, high jump, shot put, discus and third in the 200M and long jump. The senior victrix ludorum title went to Jewellann Howell of Ifill House with 47 points. She slammed the field in the 200M, 400M and 800M, placed second in the 1500M and came third in the shot put.
