Cuts in jobs and ministers’ salaries

Some 3,000 public sector workers will be sent home next year.

Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler says 2,000 employees from Central Government and statutory bodies will be retrenched from January, while the remainder will be sent off in March.

Government ministers and parliamentary secretaries will also be taking a 10 per cent pay cut as part of the measures aimed at stemming the country’s widening fiscal deficit.

More details soon.

Government ministers if they really cared, should take a 30% pay cut, get rid of the Government vehicles, Stop traveling 1st. class, pay their own bills, Fire all those “boards”, get rid of the ministers without portfolio, cut your own grass; and 3000 layoffs could be cut to 1500 or less. DLP, with the D now standing for Desperate, Despicable, Deplorable, Distasteful, Dastardly, Dishonest and just Don’t care.

Cutting staff is one thing – restructuring, modernizing and increasing efficiency in the name of generating more foreign exchange and true cost savings are another. During the budget they spoke of rationalizing ministries to eliminate duplication of effort. It would be good to get an update on that at this time as well. Less people doing the same things is not enough of a strategy to have long term benefit to our country.

Ministers salaries should be cut by more than 10%.. they also need to abolish these constituency councils n free bus fare for school children..

Unfortunately these job cuts will only cause more socio-economic problems since the NIS now gotta pay unemployment benefits.. less ppl will be working so less ppl will pay taxes n less patronage of businesses will still result in less VAT collection..

I really hope they achieve their objectives.. SMFH

    1. Didn’t Prime Minister Stuart know this 1 week ago when he made the statement that he did?

    2. The Minister should begin by retrenching those persons who were taken on at the last elections. Be fair, and start there. Also, there are hundreds of persons (maybe thousands) across various Government Departments who boast of not working or of working very few hours each day. Retrench them.

    3. Stop free bus fares for all children and assist those who really need assistance.

    4. Discontinue the community councils, so far they have been very ineffective.

    5. Reduce the number of MPs. Several of them come to mind – Senator Jepter Ince, Senator Harcourt A. Husbands and Hon. Patrick M. T. Todd.
