Landship tribute

kadooment2013landshipThe Republic Bank Opening Gala and Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes is traditionally the signal to all Barbados and revellers abroad alike that Crop-Over is here.

While activities begin in late May, the Gala, with all its pageantry on June 29, paid tribute to the 150th anniversary of the Barbados Landship. Several dance troupes paid homage to the service of the Landship in the best way they could, through imitation of the now well-known moves and dance routines we all associate with the organisation.

A free event this year meant there was a sizeable crowd on hand to show appreciation for the spectacle that also included a parade through the City to Queens Park including some of the costumes of the festival, the delivery by donkey cart and blessing of the last canes, as well as the crowning of the King and Queen of the Crop – Grantley Hurley and Judy Scantlebury.
