Port calypso contest this Friday

cropoverbridgetownportcalypsocontestAnd they’re off – well almost.

The positions for the eight contesting the Bridgetown Port Inc.’s Calypso Competition were drawn last evening following a rehearsal session.

Member of the In House Committee, Sherry Yearwood noted that they encouraged the contestants to bring originals songs to the competition.

“They can have someone write their song for them, but we encourage them yes to have new material,” she said,

She explained that the competition came out of a desire to find ways to foster greater bonds among the different divisions within the Port. Since the headquarters were so far removed from the cruise terminal and port offices themselves, Yearwood said they had hoped the competition would help the employees become more familiar with each other in a fun and relaxed setting.

“We wanted to do something different. We actually started with an annual bonnet parade but then we thought about doing something more. So the idea for the calypso competition came up and from there it just took off.

“There is some division between the offices because they are so far apart physically and you don’t always get to see or meet up with each other, so this is one of the ways we thought to bridge that gap,” she stated.

This is the fifth year for the competition, which will come off on Friday night at the Air/Sea Transfer Tent, by the cruise terminal.

Reigning monarch Jacque Jackson Unplugged Collins, will be attempting to reclaim her title won last year with Help Them Out. This year she will be singing Bad Decisions, in what is expected to be a very keen contest.

The positions and songs for the competition will be as follows:

1. Raphael Straw Hat Atkins – Port Happenings

2. Richmond De Disciple Reid – Set A Good Example

3. Latoya Big Brown Eversley – My Time A Year

4. Jacque Jackson Unplugged Collis – Bad Decisions

5. Kelly Lady K Springer – I Dare You

6. Clesia Soca C Oxley – He Aint No Man, He’s Is A Mouse

7. Tamisha Tammy B Clarke – My Name Is HIV

8. Kerryanne Hot’N Spicy Deane – Sing Something

Other performers on the evening will also include Biggie Irie and Porgie and Murdah. (LB)
