Upgrade needed

Barbados’ tourism plant needs upgrading, said Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy.

Speaking at the launch of Sugarland Gardens yesterday evening, he also said that Pangroove Elegant Events, which will be operating the venue “now holds the position as a trendsetter in the event planning and rental business with a growing cadre of staff”, was a “great success story”.

That story he said, needs to be told as it “can inspire other small businesses on the island that they too can grow steadily their clientele and, with a few adjustments to your business strategy according to the opportunities presented, become established businesses that can stand the test of time”.

“Entrepreneurship is necessary to drive job creation when jobs are hard to come by. Entrepreneurship in tourism, in particular, is to be encouraged by government and financial institutions, as a way to help drive growth in the sector.

“There is a great need for us to upgrade much of our tourism plant in order to maintain our competitiveness internationally. We have to keep our product fresh if we are to maintain our competitiveness on the world market.

“Sugarland Gardens, the newest addition to our tourism offering, is a strong demonstration by a small, indigenous company that we possess the ideas and the resources and the capacity to rebuild our economy.

“Here is a small company taking risks to orchestrate growth that more people can have jobs. A small enterprise committed to helping clients celebrate life’s greatest moments through events comparable with those held internationally.

“This venture is highly commendable and sends a strong message to other businesses that even in challenging times we can still play our cards right in preparation for the eventual return of economic growth,” Sealy said.

He also congratulated to the management and staff at Pangroove Elegant Events on this major milestone from your humble beginnings.
