Three batsmen hit half centuries as the Sir Garfield Sobers Schools cricket tournament played its rain delayed second round of matches yesterday.

Combermere and Foundation both notched second wins whilst Solihull and Choiseul recorded their first of the tournament. In the Combined Zone B, Pinelands and Powergen Penal also scored second wins while Dominica and BCL Juniors — in their first match — recorded opening wins.

Hasani Newton stroked an unbeaten 69 out of BCL’s 198 in 40 overs as the home side beat Antigua by 106 runs. Nick Starkey’s 51 propelled Solihull to the day’s highest team score (210/8) as they beat Presentation College by 27 runs. The other half century was scored by Matthew Jones (50) of Combermere in that school’s 35-run win over Vishnu Hindu School.

Two bowlers enjoyed four wicket hauls, but the pick of the bowlers was Akeem Harris who grabbed 5 for 17 as Pinelands skittled out New Amsterdam Combined for 48 runs. Kimron George of Dominica hauled in 4 for 20 in Dominica’s two-wicket win over St. Leonard’s while Keron Simmons of Queen’s Park enjoyed returns of 4 for 16 in a losing effort against Penal.
