Barbados had a good day in the pool on day one of the 2013 Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.

The swimming championship which started on Saturday runs until Friday.

Barbados are currently in third place on the overall points position and are tied in second spot in the medals standing.  Venezuela is in first position with 185 points, while hosts Costa Rica are second with 112 points and Barbados third with 85 points.

While not all the Barbadian swimmers have medalled most of them made finals on the first day which contributed to the overall points standing.

Damon St. Prix won the 50m freestyle for age 11 to 12 boys in a time of 26.91 seconds while compatriot Luis Sebastian Weekes finished fourth in 27.45 sec. St. Prix also took third spot in the 100m backstroke in 1.10.06 while team-mate Jack Kirby finished second in the same event in 1:08:61.

Both St. Prix and Kirby were part of the quartet that also included Weekes and Kobi Talma that finished second in the 4 x 100m medley relay, clocking a time of 4:39.78.

Lani Cabrera and Sariyah Sherry also registered second-place finishes in the 800m freestyle for age 18 and over and 50m freestyle for age 13 to 14 girls respectively. Cabrera clocked 9:21.97 while Sherry touched the wall in a time of 27.94.

In the 800m freestyle for girls 13 to 14 years old, Hannah Gill clocked 9:32.96 to take third position while team-mate Alexis Clarke finished in fifth position in a time of 9: 38. 14.
