Tight draughts battle

It was a tight battle yesterday to determine who would clinch the last remaining semi- final spot in the Barbados National Draughts Tournament.

In the end Darwin Lorde defeated Dennis Douglin 2-0 when two wins were needed to take the final spot, thus edging out Michael Holmes of the US by one point in the process. The other semi-finalists are Ronald “Suki” King, Jack Francis and Colin Price. The semi- finals to be played tonight will see defending champion King facing the tenacious Lorde, while Francis will be seeking to fend off Price.

The winners will face each other in the final tomorrow for the distinction of the title of national champion. The majors division was won by Anderson Hunt, while the lone female, Wilma Branch, finished seventh in a group of 14.

The tournament is taking place at All Souls Church Annex, Holligan Road, Bank Hall.
