Top mixologist off to Jamaica

mixologistwinnerdavidbarkerTop local mixologist David Barker will soon be off to represent Barbados in Jamaica at the Stoli Mix Masters Regional competition.

This competition runs from May 17 to 19 and he will come up against 10 of top mixologists from across the region. The winner will earn US$1,000 and an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas, Nevada.

He won this opportunity by beating out an extremely tight field of seven other mixologists last Tuesday night at the first ever Stoli Vodka Invitational Mixology competition at Limebar in Limegrove Lifestyle Centre in Holetown.

Barker has been mixing drinks for about 10 years and is bar manager at the Tapas Restaurant. He was not a stranger to winning mixology competitions, and in fact the euphoric young man told Barbados TODAY he competed at Hendricks Gin, Brookers Gin and a few flair competitions in Barbados as well as in Jamaica and also represented Barbados at the Taste of the Caribbean.

So, with fingers crossed, he said he would use this latest competition as an opportunity to exhibit the level of craftsmanship he has attained.

“I think that I am going to go and do the best I can and I am sure I will give everybody a run for their money,” he said.

To win bragging rights and $1,000, Barker had to create three drinks in eight minutes. He made A Complete Cardinal, did a spin on the classic Harvey Wallbanger and from a mystery basket he used basil and honey to make a winning cocktail.

Other contestants were 2012 Caribbean Bartender of the Year and Sandy Lane Hotel bartender, Jamaal Bowen, Narissa Beckles, Phillip Cassanova Antoine and Ezra Edghill from Lime Bar, Antonio Busby from Daphne’s, Cardinal Fields of Cin Cin Restaurant and Thaddeus Sealy of Coral Reef.

Brand Manager for Stoli Vodka, Allister Straker, told Barbados TODAY they decided to hold the competition as a way to promote the three pillars of the brand-building exercises: art, fashion and music. In addition, he said, Stolichnaya Vodka internationally was very big into mixology and competition and they realised mixology was growing throughout the island and decided to make their impact in that manner.

Stoli Vodka will launch a DJ competition from Monday called The Stoli Most Original DJ Competition. (KC)
