Jones shines in the US

Fresh from winning gold in the long jump at the recently concluded CARIFTA Games in the Bahamas, Barbadian Akela Jones’s immense potential is being noticed and rewarded at the Oklahoma Baptist University.

The former Springer Memorial stand-out and team-mate Jura Levy†have been named as Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week for February 4 to 10.

Levy, a senior from Jamaica, had a top to US time at all collegiate levels and the No. 1 NAIA time in the 60 metres at 7.25 seconds, placing second at the University of Arkansas Tyson Invitational.

Jones, a freshman, broke two school records while establishing new NAIA top marks in the high jump and long jump. She cleared 5-10 in the high jump and sailed 20 feet, 5.25 inches in the long jump at the OBU Invitational in Norman, Oklahoma.
