Barbados, T&T face-off

PORT OF SPAIN – Barbados will be looking to stamp their authority early in their Regional Four Day Tournament clash with Trinidad and Tobago starting tomorrow at Queen’s Park Oval.

The visitors were dumped out of the Regional Super50 after losing to T&T by 41 runs at the Oval, and will want to keep possession of third spot, although both teams have already qualified for the semi-finals.

During yesterday’s training session at the match venue, coach Hendy Springer said that scoring big in their first innings was going to be crucial if Barbados were to win the contest.

“It’s going to take a big first innings score,” said Springer. “From my experiences it doesn’t make sense playing second innings cricket. You’ve got to get a big first innings score, and rely then on your bowlers to do the business.”

Notwithstanding their woes in the shorter version of the game, Springer said Barbados were confident of pulling off the win after they beat T&T away last year.

“We beat Trinidad twice last year, both home and away. But that was last season. This season they’ve got some young guys who I am sure are looking for the opportunity to score, because most of your heavy hammers are away, your stars are away. But it would make them competitive, the fact that they’re trying to make the best of the opportunity.”

But Barbados’ good mix of youth and experience will give them the edge, Springer said. He dubbed the match a “competition of wits and awareness”. (windiescricket)
