Sunday school teacher killed
PORT-OF-SPAIN – A Freeport Sunday school teacher, described as the “Mother Teresa” of her village, was abducted, killed, and her body burnt in a vehicle yesterday.
Police believe that mother of two, Jennifer Ali, was shot before being burned in the backseat of an Isuzu pick-up at Sou-Sou Lands, Carlsen Field.
Police were told a High Court matter involving Ali was to begin next month. The matter involved the ownership of a portion of land which Ali had allegedly inherited two years ago from an elderly woman she had cared for.
Police were also investigating whether the killing was linked to the assault of two of Ali’s nephews, who were beaten and robbed two weeks ago.
Ali, 43, was kidnapped at a junction at Siewdass Road and Mission Road in Calcutta No. 2 around 6 a.m., a minute’s drive from the family home at Cemetery Road, off Siewdass Road.
Ali’s pastor and friend, Bickram Singh, said she left home to work at the Couva/Talparo/Tabaquite Regional Corporation.
“I was told she left home around 6 o’clock this morning, which was a bit late, because she got kept back doing her normal household chores,” said Singh.
“She was alone in the vehicle when she got attacked. She tried to call her husband and family and alert them what happened. They (the kidnappers) took over her van and went to Carlsen Field and that was where she was found, with the van burning.”
Ali’s sister-in-law, Afrose Manny, said she spoke to Ali on Wednesday night for almost an hour on the phone.
“She did not have any reason to be afraid of anything. We talked about going on vacation in a few months’ time and of going to visit my sister on Sunday. She loved to help people and everyone loved her,” said Manny.
Ali’s body was removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James and police said DNA samples would be taken to confirm the woman’s identity.
Blood samples were taken yesterday from Ali’s 14-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son in order to help with her identification, but Ali’s relatives are already convinced.
Her husband, Hydar Ali, is a self-employed building contractor.
Her mother, Joyce Alexander, said she did not know why anyone would hurt her. (Express)
