CARIFTA team named

28 to represent island at regional meet

The Athletics Association of Barbados today announced a 28-member strong squad for the 2013 CARIFTA games slated for the Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas from March 28 to April 1.

The team will be managed by Maureen Dottin and the head coach is Bryan Holder.

Several athletes will be returning to the CARIFTA stage after previous outstanding performances, including former Springer Memorial stand-out Akela Jones who took gold in the Girls Under-20 long jump at last year’s games in Bermuda. Janeil Craig who won bronze in the Boys’ Under-20 javelin last year behind 2012 CARIFTA and Olympic gold medallist Keshorn Walcott also returns.

Hall aims for gold

Shakera Hall, who copped the bronze medal in the Under-20 100m hurdles behind compatriot and gold medallist Sade Mariah-Greenidge, will be seeking to go two better when she takes to the track in a few days’ time in the Bahamas.

At last year’s CARIFTA games Harrison College’s Mario Burke ran 22.28.05 in the 200 metres to take the bronze medal among the Under-17 boys and returns to the games hoping to improve on that performance and to enhance his growing reputation as a top junior Caribbean sprinter. His domestic times at the 100m and 200m have already rivalled and surpassed those of fellow Harrisonian and 2000 Sydney Olympic bronze medallist Obadale Thompson at a similar age.
