Cane grinding starts today

Grinding of cane in this year’s sugar crop got underway today at the two factories currently in operation.

At Andrews in St. Joseph operations started well, while at Portvale in St. James grinding commenced this afternoon after “a few electrical issues” that caused a delay, were eventually resolved.

The collection of canes for delivery to Andrews begun yesterday, while Portvale was still in a preparatory mode.

This year’s harvest is project to produce 18,000 tons of sugar, 80 per cent of which is targeted for the European Union market. (EJ)
