St. Leonard’s, QC play to stalemate

Defence was at an optimum in yesterday’s Coca Cola-sponsored Barbados Secondary School’s Under-16 Football Competition match-up between Queen’s College and St. Leonard’s Secondary, finishing in a tame 0-0 draw at Husbands, St. James.

It was a game which neither team could complain of a shortage of opportunities, especially St. Leonard’s, who also squandered a penalty, which was a result of an unfortunate injury to one of their players in the box. As a result of the injury play had to be held up for †45 minutes until the young man was stable enough to be removed for medical attention.

At the resumption, Jade Chandler stepped up to take the penalty but his placement at waist height to the stronger right side of goal keeper Dante Niles, allowed for an easy save. A few minutes later Queen’s College missed a golden opportunity when Brandon Crichlow chose to tap the ball back to the custodian at snail’space after finding himself in a one on one position with the goal keeper.

†In the end it must be said that both teams were guilty of not adequately using the mid-field in their attacking build up, choosing instead to play the ball up-field from defence to forward too often.
