Big opportunities

In a matter of weeks the Miss Big & Beautiful Pageant will be seeking delegates for its 10th edition.

I am still in awe that I have been in pageantry for almost a decade.

Every day I am asked what the requirements to enter this competition are. First let me set the record straight in regards to the weight requirement.

The Miss Big & Beautiful Organisation has never placed a weight requirement as previously thought. Many Barbadians are still under the impression that in order to enter you must be 250 pounds or over. I always tell persons who may be interested in entering the pageant to please contact any member of the organisation to get information on the requirements.

Pageantry is not for everyone. It takes motivation, confidence and a strong will to complete this process. Many who have been through this process would understand.

First you have to deal with those negative persons in your life, even some family members who may ask why you are entering a pageant. Self doubt will also come into play as you may ask yourself if this is what you really want to do or if can you even attempt it.

Finally you may come to the first auditions if you get over your fears. After you are chosen you will get the opportunity to meet other females; some you may like and others not so much. Your aim is to become a sponge and absorb as much as you can while you are there.

Never become a follower; always be a leader. Never allow anyone to make you feel less than what you are. Always remember that pageantry is a marathon not a sprint; you must pace yourself. The one that wants it the most almost always become the winner.

I always tell persons who have the desire to enter pageants that you must become an actress. It is not everyday you will be feeling on top of the world but you must never let the world know what you are going through, especially on the night of the pageant.

Some critics believe that pageants do nothing for those who participate in them but I beg to differ. I believe it is dependent on what you entered the pageant for. Many people enter either to gain self esteem, exposure or knowledge. I always say don’t knock it unless you try it.

For those you are interested in participating in anything is new always go with an open mind. Never allow other’s opinion deter you. They may be stopping you from reaching your full potential. Believe in yourself and your abilities and you will go far.

Always surround yourself with persons who will motivate you and push you to reach the sky’s limit not persons who never have anything positive to say.

Always remember opportunity is available for everyone ≠– all you have to do is grab it! Have a wonderful week ahead!!!
