Starlet lands ‘Annie’ role

entertainmenquvenzhanewallisQuvenzhané Wallis had a very busy Sunday.

The 9-year-old attended the Academy Awards as the youngest Best Actress nominee in Oscars history. But in case you missed it, she also landed her next big Hollywood role – as the title character in an upcoming remake of the musical Annie.

Asked on the Oscars red carpet if she can sing, Wallis was charmingly coy. “I guess,” she replied from the red carpet.

For its part, Sony’s Columbia Pictures, which announced the news on Sunday, believes it has its girl for the 2014 film.

“With the recent Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim, Quvenzhané Wallis is a true star, and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star,” said Hannah Minghella, president of production at Columbia Pictures.

Willow Smith was originally named as the star of the remake, but according to a Deadline report in January, she dropped out of the film as she outgrew the role.

“She is an extraordinary young talent with an amazing range, not only as an actress but as a singer and dancer, and we can’t wait for audiences to further discover her.”

Annie, a hit Broadway musical in the late ’70s about an orphan’s adventures, was made into a movie in 1982 with Aileen Quinn in the title role and Carol Burnett as the orphanage mistress Miss Hannigan. The show is currently back on Broadway in a revival production.

On the Oscars red carpet, Wallis admitted that her acting career was going well. But she added that she still has a plan B in place – being a dentist.

“I would like to,” she said sweetly. (People)
