Clubs come out swinging in tennis tournament

Summerhayes, Yacht Club, Windward and Tennis Centre were winners when the 2013 Republic Bank/Barbados Tennis Association’s Inter-Club tennis tournament served off on Saturday.

Playing at various venues across the island, the tournament brings together the island’s top players, past and present, in a team-tennis format where points are secured based on games and matches won.

Summerhayes, the defending champions, defeated ICBL Holders Crew 52-11 at the National Tennis Centre while Yacht Club won 49-28 over the University of the West Indies, at the Hilton courts.

The National Tennis Centre stopped Ocean View 51-37, at Wildey, and Windward, playing at home in St. Phillip, registered a hard-fought 49-35 victory over the Paragon Club.

Eight clubs are taking part in the tournament this year which has seen the introduction of a singles competition, aimed at increasing participation and involvement of younger players.

Along with the singles, two men’s doubles matches, two female doubles matches and a mixed doubles match are played in each tie.††
