PORT OF SPAIN — President-designate Justice Anthony Carmona’s resignation from the judiciary officially took effect from yesterday.
And today he was elected as the fifth President of Trinidad and Tobago by the Electoral College, which consists of the members of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Outgoing President George Maxwell Richards and his wife, Dr Jean Ramjohn- Richards, left the country yesterday for vacation. They are expected to return on February 25.
Both outgoing and incoming presidents have something in common — their love for Carnival.
On Carnival Monday, Richards and his wife were on the road playing mas in San Fernando this year with the band Kalicharan and Associates.
They played in the all-inclusive section God and Goddess of De Sky and were decked in green-coloured costumes.
On Carnival Tuesday, they played in Tribe in Port of Spain.
Carmona and his wife, Reema, also took part in the festivities and played in Tribe.
Carmona has been playing mas since his childhood days, and he will continue to do so with his wife come next year.
He was the sole nominee for president so was automatically ratified as the country’s next President at 2 p.m. (Express)
