Matthews’ haul sinks Harrison Old Scholars

Skipper Michael Matthews grabbed a sensational, record six-wicket haul to spur Foundation A Old Scholars to a 62-run win over Harrison College Old Scholars, while The Lodge School Old Scholars had a thrilling one-wicket victory against Alleyne Alumni in the fifth annual Christ Church Foundation School Joel Garner Twenty20 tapeball competition at Dover, Christ Church on Friday night.

Medium-pacer Matthews, who came on as the fifth and last bowler, took six for ten off 3.4 overs as Harrison College, chasing 133 for victory, crashed from 51 for two in the 11th over to 70 all out in 16.4 overs in the Lewin/Gilpin Jones Zone B.

Matthews’ figures were the best ever in the tournament.

The only double-figure contributor was former Barbados captain Jason Haynes, who made 16 as an opener. There were 33 extras.

Left-arm fast bowler Michael Holder picked up two for nine.

Dwight Carter top-scored with 26 at No. 7 in Foundation’s 132 for nine off 20 overs after they were sent in.

Captain Marcel Murrell was the leading wicket-taker with three for 30, while Brandon Best took two for 17 and Darnell Greenidge, two for 23.

Earlier, Lodge, chasing 125 for victory off 16 overs, rallied from 102 for nine in the 14th over to triumph with one ball to spare in the Lee Harford Skeete/Lewiston Wellington Zone A.

Needing 14 runs off the last over from medium-pacer Trevon Murray, former Barbados fast bowler Corey Edwards took ten off the first three balls including two fours and ended the match with a boundary in an unbeaten 31.

Opener Micah St. Hill topscored with 40.

Captain Kenrick Marshall made 40 at the top in Alleyne’s 124 for five off 16 overs after they won the toss.

The tournament continues tomorrow at Briar Hall with Deighton Griffith Old Scholars opposing Princess Margaret Old Scholars in the Lee Harford Skeete/Lewiston Wellington Zone A, starting at 7 p.m.
