All Stars men dished out a 4-0 thrashing on the Barbados Defence Force last night, as the first day of the UWIHC/UWI Hockey Scrim-fest Championships got underway at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.

All Stars got the ball rolling early in the game when Damien Downes blasted the first goal into the bars in the fourth minute. Andrew Morris added to the BDF’s problems with a strike nine minutes later.

The BDF simply could not get their offence going and it was no surprise when in the 22nd minute Downes scored his second goal. Two minutes later Marlon Daniel completed the rout with a fourth goal.

In other men’s action Deacons went one better than All Stars when they put five goals past Blackbirds in an efficient 5-2 victory that was marked by some good stick work from the Deacons’ players. †

Akeem Douglas opened the scoring with a ninth-minute strike, which was followed by a 19th minute effort from Jabari Walcott. Blackbirds, however, were not daunted and after some good offensive build-up, Justin Catlin responded for Blackbirds. But Deacons responded immediately with quick-fire strikes from Raymond Nurse (20th minute) and Keron Taylor (22nd).

Both sides would again score within seconds of each other with Neil Franklin scoring for Deacons and Catlin getting his second goal of the encounter.

In women’s action Ayanna Wilson’s 10th minute goal for Hockey Freekz was cancelled out by Keisha Boyce’s 28th minute effort to give the Combermere Old Scholars Association a 1-1 share of the spoils.

The action was fast and furious as Cool Runnings’ men beat Live Up 4-2 in an exciting game. Paul Gill (7th & 19th minutes), Che Warner (16th) and Akeel Trotman-Grant (30th) scored for Cool Runnings, while Akeem Rudder responded for the game Live Up team with goals in the 12th and 29th minutes.

In another women’s match-up the UWIHC and the BB LIBERZ drew 0-0, while in other men’s action, Khevyn Williams’ goal in the eighth minute and team-mate Aaron Forde’s 15th minute effort, gave Combermere School Old Scholars a 2-1 win over UWIHC. Rohan Thomas netted for the losers in the 23rd minute.††
