102 reasons to celebrate
Age is only a number, age is the way you feel.
Calypsonian De Hawk once said this, and last night if Alma Rae didn’t feel like a 25-year-old she sure partied like one.
That’s because last evening family and friends held a party at her home in Hart’s Gap, St. Michael to celebrate her 102nd birthday. Even when the party ended some time close to midnight she still had energy enough to party some more.
One of her grand children, jazz singer CiCi, described her as amazing. She said it was like “comedy fest” as she enjoyed herself and constantly had a “come back” for people of all ages who dared to tell her about her behaviour.
“My grandmother is one of the healthiest women I know,” she told Barbados TODAY.
She has never been sick a day in her life. She doesn’t†take medicine, only a little Buckley’s or a rub down of Iodex, but she is as strong as a drum. The only thing wrong with her, and nothing ain’t really wrong with it, is her age and sometimes her mouth can be a problem,” she said jokingly.
Her great grandson, with whom she lives, entertainer Troy Arthur, said he could not have achieved anything in his life with out her. He said from the tender age of six weeks Rae raised him and the love he has for her could not be described.
In her earlier years she worked as a domestic at the Marine Hotel, where she met her husband Edmond Darwin Rae. They had one daughter, who is deceased, four grand children, 10 great grands and seven great great grand children.
She like to eat a lot† of “some of everything” but she mostly prefers rice and pork.
“Don’t let the age fool you, she is not laid up or anything. She can do for herself,” he said with pride. (KC)††††
