Teen dies in gold mine collapse

GEORGETOWN — An 18-year old youth mining for gold in a tunnel in South Rupununi was killed when it caved in and trapped him underneath yesterday.

Police said Thycuf Xavier died following the accident at the Mazda Mountain, Marudi, South Rupununi.

Meanwhile, five members of the Guyana Defence Force, including an officer, have been detained in relation to their alleged involvement in criminal conduct, reportedly committed in the Cuyuni mining district recently.

Chief-of-Staff, Commodore Gary Best, who visited the area recently, has given assurance that those involved would be charged and placed before the courts.

“Once we have evidence that the soldiers came here and went to the backdam and robbed the miners, I will ensure that they are charged and put before the court; and if they have to end up in prison, then they will end up in prison,” he said.

The GDF has in newspaper advertisements warned the mining community that, “Officers and soldiers of the GDF are not authorised to conduct any mining operations, request to see and inspect any mining licenses or intermeddle into any mining activities except in the presence of a GGMC (Guyana Gold and Mining Corporation) Mining Officer.

“Therefore, members of the mining community must not submit themselves to any actions by officers and soldiers of the Guyana Defence Force acting alone with respect to enforcement of laws governing mining in Guyana,” it added. (CMC)
