Ivory Coast knocked out

PHOKENG – Ivory Coast again failed to live up to their billing as African Cup of Nations favourites after a 2-1 quarter-final defeat to Nigeria at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in South Africa today.

In a cagey, tactical game Nigeria’s more positive outlook paid off as Emmanuel Emenike’s thunderbolt and a deflected Sunday Mba goal saw them through.

Cheick Tiote was on target for Ivory Coast, with Didier Drogba hugely disappointing in what will surely be his last chance at international silverware.

Meanwhile Jonathan Pitroipa’s extra-time header put Burkina Faso in the semi-finals at the expense of Togo in another quarter-final today.

Rennes winger Pitroipa, Burkina Faso’s most celebrated player, headed home a Charles Kabore corner on the stroke of half-time in extra-time after a goalless draw in the regulation 90 minutes.
