Big day for Bajan NFL star

Barbadian lovers of the National Football League in the USA might very well be throwing their support behind the Baltimore Ravens when they take the field against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday inSuper Bowl XLVII at Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Ramon Harewood.

Ramon Harewood.

That’s because in the Ravens’ line-up is Barbadian Ramon Harewood, the former Queen’s College student who was drafted in the 6th round of the 2010 NFL Draft, with the Ravens signing him to a three-year contract.

Harewood spent most of 2010 and 2011 on the injured list, and also underwent surgery on torn ankle ligaments. However, Harewood saw action last year and actually started some games.

The former Morehouse College footballer, who packs in about 334 pounds on his 6 ft 6in frame, is not expected to start, but if he gets on the field, or even does not, a victory for the Ravens will mean a prestigious NFL ring for massive Barbadian.

A win for Baltimore on Sunday will also have another significant aspect.

Sunday is Harewood’s 26th birthday.
