Painting the world

new york based barbadian artist making his mark

John Martin is painting the world one colour at a time and he’s creating a beautiful place.

The former Ellerslie Secondary School student came home last year for a visit where he visited schools, shared his ideas for a book, painted a mural at his dad Hal Martin’s hotel and before he knew it he was heading back home.

“After leaving Barbados and coming back to the United States, I explored a few other cities before deciding to settle in New York. In New York I have a good family base, and it also offers a range of publishing opportunities, which is important as I’ve been working on my children books titled What makes me Happy, What brings me Joy,” he told Bajan Vibes.

“In the past year I’ve developed three additional books, making a total of five books in the series. As part of the development of the books, I’ve met with a few schools to follow up on inspirational presentation and possible art workshops, which I started in Los Angeles and continued in Barbados.

“I have received great reviews and encouragement on my work and New York promises to be instrumental in getting my books published. In addition to writing children books and developing strategies for my presentations I have done quite a bit with my art. I’ve done several custom jobs including company logos, portraits and other personal artwork as well as participated in a few art shows. My most recent show was in Brooklyn at the Greenpoint Gallery and prior to that I participated in a Halloween show with the art collective Art Rapture,” the artist shared.

He is currently working on a 20 foot mural at Green Garden Health Food Store, a prominent Juice Bar/Restaurant in the Bronx.

“In exception to the extremely cold winters I believe New York City offers a bundle of opportunities for a creative minded, determined to be successful artist like myself and I decided to stay for a while giving myself a chance to see what I can create in this amazing city!” he said. (DS)
