Unhealthy recycling approach

Bottle recovery in Barbados, like much of the developed world, is now big business. But while separation at the point of disposal to facilitate recycling has led to the development of orderly businesses elsewhere, the collection process here often involves some unsightly and potentially unhealthy approaches.

It is now quite common to see characters of all types rummaging through garbage cans, even in the middle of the City during business hours, at times scattering what they don’t take.

Their efforts may assist in the diversion of tonnes of material from the landfill annually, but we are not sure that we can support scenes like this one, captured earlier this week by photographer Gregory Waldron in the middle of Broad Street.
