Donating for the cure
Just prior to Christmas, the Barbados Cancer Society received a welcome contribution, with the donation of $20,000 from CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank.
These funds were the proceeds from a collection from the bank’s staff who took part in the inaugural “Walk and Run for the Cure” in Barbados last September 30.
More than 700 staff members, their friends and families participated in the run and walk, which took place at the Garrison Savannah. Staff members made contributions that were matched by the CIBC FirstCaribbean charitable foundation, totalling the amount presented to cancer society.
The money is to be used for the ongoing programmes at the society, including the Breast Screening Programme. The programme’s committee members walked with the CIBC FirstCaribbean employees while the Cancer Society set up a booth and gave out information and advice to staff members who were present.
Following the one-kilometre walk and five kilometre run, employees of the bank participated in fitness sessions with Evy Bentham and the Fitness Bunnies.
The event was one of 17 which took place in the Caribbean in the bank’s regional territories to raise awareness for the fight against cancer and was the first in the region. Employees joined 13,000 of their colleagues from CIBC Canada in 60 run sites there. The Canadian employees have been participating in runs and walks for the past 16 years as they support the fight against cancer and assist in the research to find a cure.
