All revved up

When English co-driver Stuart Leach returns to Barbados in mid-year it will mark the 10th anniversary of his first visit to take part in Sol Rally Barbados.

Sol Rally Barbados 2013 will be Leach’s seventh attempt at the island’s premier event.† In 2003, 2007 and 2008, he was co-driver for fellow-Brit Simon Wallis, but has since become an adopted member of the island’s Chicken Pen Racing outfit.

Founded by long-standing competitor Norman Catwell, CPRA is a form of collective, which has fostered the careers of a number of rising young drivers, including Catwell’s son Kyle and Jamal Brathwaite. In 2009, Leach co-drove for Catwell Snr, then for Ron Greaves in 2010 and last year.

Leach’s driver for 2013 – Catwell Snr, once more – was decided in an unusual way, as Leach explained.

“We could not wait until May, so we popped out for Christmas – where else would you want to be but Barbados? My seat was decided between all the Chicken Pen boys on the toss of an English coin, just before lunch on Christmas day at Norman’s.”

Sol Rally Barbados 2013 comes off on June 1st and 2nd with the Scotia Bank King of the Hill slated for May 26. This year’s Sol Rally Barbados is the 24th running of the Barbados Rally Club’s annual International All-Stage Rally and marks the sixth year of title sponsorship by the Sol Group. (RB)
