Empire strike back

The highly talented teenager Shai Hope made 41 in Pickwick’s win over St. Catherine’s (FP).

It was a virtual no-contest yesterday as ICBL Empire beat Ince Transport MTW by a massive 92 runs at their Bank Hall, St Michael home ground, as the sixth series of matches in the Sagicor General-sponsored Barbados Cricket Association’s Twenty20 championship continued.

Batting first Empire marched to 183 for 6 wickets with Barbados batsman Alcindo Holder butchering 63 runs from 37 with 9 threes and seven fours over the wall on the small Pavilion Road, St Michael ground. The Hinds’ lads got in on the carnage with Jason stroking 45 and former West Indies batsman and national captain Ryan making an unbeaten 30 not out. In the onslaught Kevin Gittens covered himself in glory to emerge with commendable figures of 5 for 30.

When they batted MTW made indifferent progress and lost wickets steadily as they failed to come to grips with Empire’s varied but hardly overwhelming bowling attack. Once again it was Gittens to the fore, this time with the bat, as he top-scored with 24. Haldain Payne added 22 to the disappointing MTW batting effort.

Chief wrecker was Andre Evelyn who had the flattering figures of 3 for 9 and Nikolai Charles who snared 2 for 11. Barbados all-rounder Kevin Stoute chipped in with 2 for 24. The win took Empire to 12 points from five matches in Zone A, while MTW have four points from five matches.
