What looks good

by Latoya Burnham

So often I get the urge to talk about what’s coming up in movie land.

This week I was struck by such a feeling and as I am wont to do, went on the hunt to see what’s coming. Since what’s here this month, with the huge exception of Alex Cross, doesn’t fill me with thrills, and since I’ve already gushed excessively about Cross, I’m going to give some hints as to what I’m looking forward to.

When I first heard of Cloud Atlas, and rewatched the trailer twice and still had no clue what it was about, I tossed it off. But it would not leave me, for the mere fact that I rate Tom Hanks and Halle Berry fairly highly despite the fact that she’s chosen some really questionable roles lately. Jim Broadbent and Hugo Weaving kinda sealed the deal for me though; so with a late October release date, I wanna see it.

According to the write up, “Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.”

But that’s enough touchy feely stuff for me. Anyone who knows me or reads my reviews knows I’m an action girl, first and foremost. So in what’s to come, has to be high action first, anything else after.

That’s why Skyfall caught my attention. “In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.”

I get excited for Bond in a way I don’t get excited for anyone other than Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man or Sherlock Holmes or any Johnny Depp flick, no matter how big a yarn it is. I make no apologies for that.

Now Javier Bardem as a bad man – yeah, bring it on. I hate, absolutely hate the blond hair, but that’s neither here nor there cause the man can act. I’m also interested to see what Bond’s “partner?” Eve (Naomie Harris) aka Mika from Ninja Assassin or Tia Dalma from Pirates of the Caribbean, will do here. I like how she continues to impress me in her roles. This one is out November 9 internationally, but not too sure when it gets here. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the locals will surprise us and bring it the same day.

Since I’m running out of space, I’m gonna skip a few months and tell you about the ditty I stumbled across last night. You have to look out for Jason Statham early next year. He’s in one called Parker whose trailer I am praying is not as good as it gets.

Parker is about “a thief with a unique code of professional ethics who is double-crossed by his crew and left for dead. Assuming a new disguise and forming an unlikely alliance with a woman on the inside, he looks to hijack the score of the crew’s latest heist.”

Sounds a little like any Jason Statham movie of late you say? I may agree in as far as it concerns the criminal with a code thing and that it looks like he’s set to share nuff, nuff blows in this one. My only disappointment is that JLo is in it. But after the “can’t act” chicks they’ve been throwing at him ever since Transporter and Crank I must say I’m waiting to see what Jenny from the Block has in the bag of acting tricks.

I must say I love the last line in the trailer when she asks the clichéd, “How do you sleep at night?” and Parker responds – “I don’t drink coffee after 7”. Corny, but my kinda line.
