Rest in peace Mighty Whitey
On a sad note, VIP PASS today says Rest In Peace to Mighty Whitey, who passed on Saturday.
I knew he had been ill for some time but it still came as a shock when I heard the news. Whitey was a cool guy who totally enjoyed his time on the local stage. I suspect his involvement with music started some time before he was known as a calypsonian.
His White Glove was a serious hit, when he sang with Denis Cadogan’s Scorpions Tent. I remember him throwing out condoms as he manoeuvred that considerable waistline, singing: “You tink you is Michael Jackson, you come out hey lookin fuh action, no, no, no, no, no, not tonight.”
Whitey had another big hit, in more ways than one, when he teamed up with Biggie Irie and Fatman as 10, 000 Pounds of Blubber to do Rub de Belly Pun Me. That song has one of the funniest adlibs ever recorded. At one point in the song I think it is Biggie that says “come in, Whitey”, to which he replies “orrite”, clears his throat then starts to sing. That cracks me up every time.
My sincere condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.
